Symptoms
Symptoms
Aortic dissection symptoms might be similar to those of other heart complications, like a heart attack. Typical signs and symptoms involve:
Unexpected severe chest or upper back pain, usually described as a tearing, ripping, or tearing feeling, which radiates to the neck or down the back
Unexpected severe abdominal pain
Loss of consciousness
Shortness of breath
Unexpected difficulty in speaking, loss of vision, weakness or paralysis of one side of your body, identical to those of a stroke
Weak pulse or beat in one arm or thigh compared with the other
Leg pain
Difficulty walking
Leg paralysis
Causes
An aortic dissection happens in a weakened region of the aortic wall. Chronic high blood pressure might stress the aortic tissue, making it more susceptible to tearing.
Diagnosis
Diagnosing an aortic dissection could be tricky because the symptoms are the same as those of various health complications. Primary care physicians usually suspect an aortic dissection if the following signs and symptoms are present:
Sudden tearing or ripping chest pain
Widening of the aorta on chest X-ray
The blood pressure difference between right and left arms
